In this class, we will explore individual morality, societal codes, and the relationship between them both as we read prose, plays, and poems that challenge and complicate the binary distinction between right and wrong.
Life in the telenovelas are more glamorous to her than her own life. The telenovelas were filled with passion and love. When she talks about "Tu o Nadie", she says that, "someone ought to live one's life like that, don't you think? You or no one. Because to suffer for love is good. The pain all sweet somehow. In the end." Her life was lonely. She did not have anyone to talk to because both neighbors were mourning. She sunk herself deeper into the fantasy of the telenovela because she was in an abusive relationship and she did not have control over her life.
ReplyDeleteLife in the telenovelas is the life that is based on the finer things in life. It is different because she is living in an accomfortable life. It is also different because she have no type of money and these people dont have to do no such housework but she does.I think she is drawn to the programs because these are the thing she is interested in. she is interested in getting the finer things in life.
ReplyDeleteLife in the telenovas are extremely different from real life. This is because in the telenovas, the actors portray a perfect life. There is a perfect man and a perfect woman who love each other and they end up getting married. This is not always possible in real life. Cleofilas is drawn to these telenovas because she wants to live a similar life but unfortunately her life is completely different. This is the reason she is infatuated by such a life. She also notices in real life that "When a man and woman love each other, sometimes that love sours. But a parent's love for a child, a child's for its parents, is another thing entirely."
ReplyDeleteThe life in the telenovas is very similar to the one within the American Dream. Because people in the telenovas dream of having a beautiful family and live happily ever after. But in reality this is very hard to achieve, because love is not easy to be found. Cleofilas is drawn to the American Dream trap like so many others.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Samiha; as people we create ideal situations. Then when we confront reality, it's nothing like our ideal and we deal with dissapointment. That's the exact same case with Cleofilas; she was so focused on living a telenovas that she didn't have the sense to leave her husband.
ReplyDeleteThe Novelas show you fiction things that may seem real, and that's what draws Cleofila to want to have a telenovela lifestyle. Women seem happy with their husbands,a nd their husbands are strong and handsome. All she sees in the telenovelas seems so perfect. A poor and a rich unite and fall in love then face obstacles but eventually overcome them. It's like her life time dream. Others may compare it with the American dream.
ReplyDeleteCleofilas uses the telenovelas as an escape to her reality. Life in the telenovelas are perfect. The women have everything they want including passion and love which is something Cleofilas longs for in her own life. However, Cleofilas husband, Juan Pedro, isnt the romantic type. She says, "Not that he isn't a good man. She has to remind herself why she loves him when she changes the babys pampers or when she mops the bathroom floors..." Cleofilas is attracted to the telenovelas because thats the type of life she would like to have but her reality is that shes trapped in an abusive relationship.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Samiha. It is only inevitable for people to desire something so perfect. It is the nature of human. Cleofilas couldn't accept reality and see the telenovelas as something she always wanted. Cleofilas describes her husband as "not very tall, no, and he doesn't look like the men on the telenovelas." (49) It clearly implies that Cleofilas wants men compared to those on the telenovelas, wishing for a perfect relationship.
ReplyDeleteLife in the telenovelas that Cleofilas and her friends watch is full of excitement and glamor. love, passion and happy ending, most of the times. Telenovelas gives you what you really want from life but most of the times that not possible. her life is boring and she thinks that by marrying Juan Pedro that's going to change. "she would get to wear outfits like the woman in the tele, like Lucia Mendez" (65).
