In this class, we will explore individual morality, societal codes, and the relationship between them both as we read prose, plays, and poems that challenge and complicate the binary distinction between right and wrong.
Yes, i think that Brokeback Mountain would it be totally different if it had happened in another place at that time. The idea of being alone in that huge mountain is the reason behind them turning to be gay. Of course, this sitution was very rare at that time, so it was less possible to happen. For example, if they were both at Jack's family farm, then i dont think that they would be gay. This is based on the fact that there were people around.
ReplyDeleteThe story would have been different because it really depends on the location. Different locations have different conceptions of life. In Wyoming it might not have been considered "bad" but if it were situated in Brooklyn, it would have been much more difficult. Enis and Jacks's might not even be gay because of the environment and society.
ReplyDeletethe setting in brokeback mountain was in wyoming. two farmers on a ranch taking care of cattle day in and day out. the question if brokeback mountain took place in a different setting is sort of the same question that if geographical and societal effects a persons choice of sexuality. meaning if enis and jack had other people besides themselves would they still be gay. i think a person chooses his sexuality whether it be straight gay or bi in his mind. the society which he lives in either eggs him on to committing and fulfilling his desires or it can inhibit his feelings. but the choice is made in his head and to carry through with the actions depends if it is accepted within his society or like this situation that theres no one else around. for instance if it were to happen in NY it would be fine. so many people are admitting that they are gay these days with no shame so the couple in brokeback mtn would not change their relationship living here in NY. but elsewhere like germany where they despise gay people than maybe their relationship wouldnt even have started even though they had feelings for each other
ReplyDeleteI think if it was in a city, these two men wouldn't have been married. They would have just stayed with each other from the start. I feel like they felt the pressure in some way to get married to a woman because that's how society works. Meanwhile in citiesd like NYC, there is more acceptance of homosexuality.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Fatima, if the story was in the city I think it would be worst; the setting changes not the year it takes place. This story was written in a time when homosexuality was strongly discouraged. Plus I think religiously devot people would have terrorized the two cowboys.
ReplyDeleteThe story takes place in a rural area during the times when homosexuality wasn't accepted. I believe that different settings would change a lot for them. I agree with Fatima, big cities have a greater range of ideas and "there is more acceptance of homosexuality". However, in a city, things could have turn differently, and the characters could have never met, or had found perfect girlfriends. You never know...
ReplyDeleteThe environment has a great impact to one's life and behavioural development. If this story took place in the metropolitan area, the development of the characters and the story will ultimately change. This is evident because you would not see such a case in NYC nor would you find a working job similar to Enis' or Jack's.
ReplyDeletei think that the environment was the reason that they became gay. if they were in a place with a lot of bar - saloons, full of ladies and dancers this could may never happened.
