Leo vs. Sami

Compare and contrast Leo from "The Magic Barrel" with Sami from "A Man of Integrity."

  1. In many ways Leo and Sami were similar. They both were seeking for something they were missing in their lives. The differences were that Leo was looking for a good woman to be by his side and love him. And Sami was looking for the love he lost. He was looking for the love he used to have for being a doctor and the love he felt he was missing in his marriage. To me it seemed they were both seeking for love, those were the similarities. But in the end both of them were never really satisfied. Leo still was not going to be fully satisfied until he had his ideal wife and marriage, and Sami was not going to be satisfied until he found what he was missing in his life.

  2. leo and sami both have this curiosity that gets them into trouble (depending on how you understand each ending) they have this drive to pursue something unknown to them which they believe is helpful to themselves and their life. sami seeks his hidden admirer whereas leo is obsessed with a woman from a picture who he wants to marry very badly. however they differ from the fact that it is permissible for leo to seek a women he is looking to get married but sami is married his infidelity is whats wrong with his situation. leo had to find his right women and sami wanted to find his secret admirer which brought some excitement to his life.

  3. I agree with Hymie, she hit the nail on the head when she said they have a drive to puruse the unknown. The only diffrence I understand is that Leo seems somewhat justified in his pursuit, while Sami is not because he's married. Even there they are similar because both were willing to hurt whatever woman was in there way to chase the unknown.

  4. I agree with what Kevin was saying about how both Leo and Sami were willing to hurt any woman's feelings just to get their satisfaction of getting to the end but i don't think Leo has gotten to the point where he will definitly meet someone. Leo's perception of a women is exaggerated to the point of the smartest supermodel in the world. He wants to find this ideal woman that is practically perfect. He wouldn't settle for any of these women because he found some kind of flaw in them, it would of been better if he decided to stay with one and work on their flaws with them, he would of been more happier this way than being alone. Sami seemed to have a boring life and needed some kind of thrill to let him know that he was alive. For this reason, he wanted to see this woman because he wanted to talk to someone other than his wife and his patients. Both men were looking for some kind of happiness but Sami was approaching it the wrong way in terms of hiding the situation from his wife and just trying to secretly meet the woman. His wife must have done it to test his love for her and why he always came home very late even after he finished work.
